As Ford or GM’s CEO, what do you do?
It’s the mid 1990’s and you are the CEO of Ford or GM. You have a choice. The American people at this time want SUV’s, and lots of them. Compact cars are still selling, but only moderately well. Gas is well under $2 per gallon with no indication it will go up. SUV’s give your company record profits, small cars give a much smaller profit. Do you go with the flow and give people what they want, and make record profits doing it, or do you try to convince consumers to squeeze into compacts when gas is cheap, giving up profits in the process?
Keep in mind companies are there to make profits, and no one could have foreseen 9/11 or any of the events afterwards.
You have to give people what they want. You can’t dictate the market. Even Ford and GM combined are not that powerful. If Ford and GM had tried not building SUV’s some other manufacturer would have happily taken their market share.
