The winner gets to buy Wachovia’s toxic assets for next to nothing then sell them to you the taxpayer for full value.
That means an instant cash windfall profit for the winner to the tune of tens of billions of dollars at least. That windfall is coming directly from taxpayer dollars.
That is permitted by a loophole in the bill’s unjust enrichment clause. The bill purports to prevent banks from selling toxic assets to the taxpayer for more than they paid for the assets EXCEPT where the toxic assets were acquired as a result of a merger or takeover of another bank.
How are you feeling about the bailout now?
